It’s a big week for men’s and women’s tennis, as ARC hosts the Big 8 North Conference tournament Thursday, April 2 through Saturday, April 4. Here are summaries of recent men’s tennis action:
- The Beavers traveled to Santa Rosa March 17 and clinched the Big 8 North conference title with a strong 6-3 performance. The match began with all three doubles matches being closely contested. The Beavers were able to pull out victories at #2 (TJ Aukland/John Foote) and at #3 (Dylan King/Ryan Wilson) by the score of 8-5. At #1 doubles Seppi Capaul and Jimmy Giovannini fell just short, losing 9-7 after being up a break for most of the set. Heading into the singles up 2-1, the Beavers still had much work to do to secure the team victory. Seppi Capaul came back from a break down in each set to beat Santa Rosa #1 Jonathon Pike 7-5, 6-4. In another gutsy performance, John Foote battled back from a set and a break down to win the second set in a tiebreaker, and finally prevailed 6-4 in the third set against a tough opponent at the #4 spot. At #5 and #6 the Beavers were too strong as Dylan King and Ryan Wilson won routine straight-set matches, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-2 respectively. This is the 4th straight Big 8 North conference title for the Beavers!
- In their final non-conference match before playoffs, the Beavers defeated the Gladiators from Chabot College by a convincing 8-1 score March 19. The Beavers swept the doubles, highlighted by an 8-2 win at #2 by TJ Aukland and John Foote. In the singles Nic Atkinson and Nick Cardoza stepped in and performed solidly at #5 and #6, each earning 6-2, 6-4 victories. Other highlights included Seppi Capaul cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win at #1 and Dylan King grinding his way to dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory at #3.
· The Beavers were able to put all 12 players in the lineup in their final regular season conference match of the season March 20 against FLC. At #3 doubles AJ De Castro and Nick Shirk stepped into the lineup and played solidly, winning their match 8-4. In the singles, Elias Burbick beat Forrest Bacchi at #5 singles, holding off a late charge by Bacchi at the end of the second set 6-2, 6-4. Alex Bgatov competed in his 5th singles match in dual team play this season and remained undefeated, winning 6-2, 6-3. The Beavers finished the regular season with a 13-1 overall record and their 4th straight conference title. After the Big 8 North Conference Tournament the Beavers will begin dual team postseason play as the #2 seed in the Northern California team playoffs.
ARC baseball is going through a tough spell, currently on a 7-game losing streak. The Beavers hope to break out today against Modesto.
Softball broke out of their slump by sweeping a doubleheader against Modesto March 28. They are at home Friday against defending state champion Sierra.
