Beavers blow late lead again, lose 5-4 to Shasta

The American River College baseball team suffered their second walk-off defeat of the young season, this time by blowing a 4-2 lead in the 9th to Shasta College in Redding on Saturday.  The Beavers got on the board early as leadoff hitter Will Floyd (Rocklin) walked to start the game, then scored two batters later as Sophomore RF Blake Spencer (Rio Americano) hit a ground ball to score him.  They then tacked on two more in the 2nd as sophomore C Nick Huddlestun (Rocklin) doubled down the right field line to score CF BJ Baker (Ponderosa) who had reached on an error before that, which also drove in a run.  The Beavers bats then went flat as not a single base runner reached until the 8th inning when the Beavers had runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out, then loaded the bases with one out.  Blake Spencer drew a one out bases loaded walk to score Huddlestun who had singled to open the inning.  Sophomore 2B Matt Clarke (Bella Vista) then hit into an inning ending double play to end the rally.

Freshman RHP Collin Carriger (Bella Vista) threw 6 innings, allowing just one unearned run, allowing five hits and striking out four.  Freshman LHP Sean Miller (Granite Bay) threw a three-up/three-down 7th inning, then freshman Shawn Roberts (Del Campo) pitched the 8th.  Roberts did allow an unearned run as well, as the leadoff hitter of the inning reached on a dropped fly ball by LF Justin Hanlin (Whitney).  A.R.C. sophomore closer Freddy May (Folsom) had been lights out in his first two appearances, but he walked the first two Knights he faced, though several pitches were very close to being strikes.  After getting an out a sacrifice bunt, the next two batters singled, plating three runs on the inning which led to Shasta celebrating a sweep of the Beavers for the season.

A.R.C. returns home this Tuesday to face defending Bay Valley Conference champion Marin College at 2:00 p.m.
