Banged-Up Beavers Struggle Through Pre-Season
The ARC Men's Basketball team finishes the preseason with 2 wins and 10 losses. "The injury bug, and all his friends, have bitten us, repeatedly. We just can't seem to stay healthy" Coach Lorente says.
During the trip to Cabrillo, Forward CJ Hazewood went down with a season ending leg injury and Deuce Thompson suffered a knee injury that will sideline him until the start of conference play.
After competing well but coming up short in all three games at the Las Postias Tournament, losing to Contra Costa, Butte, and Siskiyous, respectively. After which, the Beavers returned to host the annual American River Classic and earned their second win of the year over Lassen College, 81-63, in the home opener, making 14-three pointers on 32 attempts (43.8%) and shooting 90% from the free throw line. Sophomore captain Vinnie Gonzales, hit a career-high seven 3-pointers to finish with 23 points. The Beavers dropped the next game to Siskyous, 77-59, as well as losing backup Freshman Point Guard Ja'Morris Shakur to an injury on a hustle play that resulted in knee-to-knee collision.
The ARC Men's Basketball team was back on the road prior to Thanksgiving break, battling in the historic Mendocino Tournament where they opened with state ranked Foothill College. The Beavers fought hard for three quarters of the game before starting Point Guard Miles Macayan suffered a foot injury in the second half, leading to the Beavers conceding the game 104-73. The following round, Lassen College avenged their loss, edging ARC 64-55. The Beavers limped through the last game, losing to Los Medanos College, 99-74.
After the much needed break, the Beavers traveled to Butte College to take on the Roadrunners. Despite an outstanding performance from Forward Elijah Watkins, who compiled 17 rebounds and 13 points, the Beavers fell short 88-62. In his first game back, Miles Macayan scored 9 points and dropped 5 assists. ARC returned home to take on a talented squad from Feather River, finishing their preseason with a hard fought loss to the Golden Eagles, 99-74, behind Tony Sperandeo's 14 points and 5 rebounds and Vinnie Gonzales' 11 points and 4 assists.
"Preseason has been tough. Some of our guys are just learning what this journey is about and enduring some hard lessons about what it takes to be successful at this level. We are as capable of a tremendous comeback story as anyone. We have all the pieces to be competitive in the league, we just need to stay healthy and stay together." Coach Lorente reflects.
