Big 8 Conference Championships
The men's track 7 field team grabbed their 5th straight conference title after scoring 229 points, nearly 100 in front of 2nd placed Modesto Junior College. With the absence of injured state-leading sprinter Robert Ellis, the Beavers had some work to do early. The first one to help out was Casey Aguirre, winning the 10k in a strategic, but slow, time of 36:34. Another first day champion was Xavier Howell in the high jump in 6'11.5". James Hubbard (also won the hammer) and Nelson Quinley went 3-4 in the discus with both throwing just over 150'. Devan Sawyer and Shawn Simms went 1-2 in the 200m in a virtual dead heat at 21.36. Richard Finical placed 2nd in the trials in the 200m, then had to bow out of the finals after breaking a toe. Luis Luna won the 1500m and 5000m on a very windy day in 3:59 and 15:02. He was later named the male track athlete of the meet. And maybe the highlight of the meet was the men's 4x100m relay, without our #1 sprinter, winning with a time of 40.66, only 0.09 off the season best.
