Women's Water Polo splits with SoCal
American River College women's water polo hosted the 6th Annual "River Rage" Tournament over the weekend. The tournament was structured using match play, with teams from northern California competing against those from southern California. Representing the South were Golden West College, Riverside City College, Mt. San Antonio College, and Cerritos College. Northern teams were American River College, San Joaquin Delta College, Fresno City College, and Santa Rosa Junior College. Golden West and Riverside both finished the tournament with undefeated records of 4-0. Mt. Sac and ARC each went .500 on the weekend with records of 2-2. Fresno City, Santa Rosa, and Cerritos each managed to win once, while Delta went home empty handed at 0-4.
American River took on three-time defending state champs Golden West in their first match-up of the tournament. Golden West took an immediate lead, and at the end of the first half ARC trailed 6-1. The third quarter opened with freshman Emily Perry drawing an ejection and then earning a goal, but Golden West was too dominant and proceeded to score four straight goals. The game closed with a 16-5 victory for Golden West.
It didn't get any easier for the Beavers when they faced their next opponent, the #2 state-ranked team from Riverside. It was a tied game 1-1 at the end of the first quarter, but Riverside's center had two natural goals out of center to put them up by three going into the third quarter. Riverside scored five more before the game ended with an 8-3 loss for the Beavers. Sophomore Elise Whittall scored all three goals for ARC.
On Saturday American River opened play against the Mounties of Mt Sac. Emily Perry scored a quick goal early for ARC from a man-up play. In the first four minutes of the second quarter the Beavers extended their lead with another goal for Perry and one apiece from sophomores Jenner Johnson and Elise Whittall. The Beavers walked away with an 8-4 victory after two more goals from Whittall, one from Carly Ashen, and another from Johnson. Goal keeper Avery Dotterer had two steals and eleven blocks.
American River closed the tournament with a 9-2 victory over Cerritos College. The Beavers used their swimming skills to finish counter attacks against the Falcons. Johnson, Kristin Boston, Juliana Rowe and Perry all scored twice for ARC, with two assists from Dotterer. The team will hit the road for the first time this season as they head to Santa Rosa on Wednesday for a double-header.
